Muscat, November ***, 2021: Oman Tourism College (OTC) announced the opening of registration for the ‘Oman Chef’ competition. This event is powered by Oman Tourism Development Company (OMRAN Group), in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and organised by Celebrate Oman. The registration is open starting today until November 21st, with the competition taking place from December 4th to 18th, held on every Saturday, at the OTC campus. The event intends to promote and celebrate locally sourced ingredients and local food consumption.

The competition is open to chefs of all ages and nationalities, male and female, who are working in Oman in any hotels, restaurants and catering companies and they occupied various positions up to the position of Sous Chef inclusive. Those wishing to participate need to fill in an online registration form and include a short profile of themselves.

Commenting on the importance of organising such events, Qais Zahir Al Hosni, Chairman and Acting Dean of OTC, said, “The Oman Chef competition seeks to promote local resources and aims at enhancing In-Country Value (ICV) for local business and SMEs in the food sector. Participants are expected to celebrate natural local ingredients by utilising Omani made food products, at all stages of the competition. This also seeks to highlight the available talents and the promising career opportunities offered by the hospitality sector within the Sultanate.”

From her side, HE Nora Ourabah Haddad, FAO representative in Oman, said, “By extending support of this competition, we look to raise awareness of local natural products by encouraging and supporting the Omani industry, introducing and promoting Omani products and shed light on the importance of choosing local food products in support of workers in the respective industry. This, in turn, will positively impact the national economy. Our support for this competition also coincides with the World Food Day celebrations that will continue until the end of the year, intended to enhance, and encourage the production and consumption of healthy food products. In addition, the purchase and consumption of local products contribute to supplementing farmers and manufacturers of food products, which leads to raising production, enhancing efficiency and the competitiveness of the Omani product across various markets, while simultaneously being beneficial to the national economy.”

Highlighting the importance of the competition, Sarah Al Balushi, Founder of Celebrate Oman, noted, “We are pleased to participate in the organising of the Oman Chef competition, which will shed light on the variety of Omani products. I am confident that the chefs in Oman will take advantage of this opportunity to augment their presence and share their experience and knowledge with others.”

The competition is an incredible opportunity for chefs and food enthusiasts in Oman to put their creative culinary skills to the test and make use of readily available local products to create an authentic Omani ambience.
