General Foundation

Duration:                             Three Semesters
Application Period:         January to February, August – September, or November – December

As English is the medium of instruction at Oman Tourism College (OTC), competence in this language is vital for academic success.

The General Foundation Programme, therefore, is essentially an intensive English Language and study skills Programme which is designed to support students’ English language learning to the level required for study in undergraduate programmes. The minimum standard expected when students pass the GFP is IELTS 5.0.

Other key areas of focus within the programme include IT skills, mathematics and general academic and study skills. The programme is based on the General Foundation standards of the Ministry of Higher Education and Oman Academic Accreditation Agency.

TEACHING & LEARNING STRATEGY

A variety of teaching and learning approaches are used in the classroom to create a collaborative environment where students will feel safe to share ideas and their challenges.

Teachers use a scaffolding approach which gradually reduces teacher support in order to encourage independence as the ultimate goal.

Constructive assessment and feedback by the teacher is considered necessary and is an intricate part of the teaching approach to help students reach their full potential.

Students are expected to be active participants in their own learning both in the classroom and independently in order to maximise learning opportunities.
